A RARE BUT WELCOME WIN FOR TRANS PEOPLE

In extraordinarily dark times for trans and gender diverse (TGD) people across the globe, Victorian Pride Lobby welcomes the news of a recent decision by the High Court of Andhra Pradesh in India. The decision categorically ruled that transgender women cannot be denied recognition as women. Further, maintaining that womanhood is not tied to reproductive ability.

Whilst the rights of TGD people are rolled back in countries such as the UK and the US, this win demonstrates the resilience and power of the LGBTIQA+ community, who continue to fight and will continue to win.

As the culture war continues in Australia to endanger the rights of our trans and gender diverse community, we continue to expect that our local, state and federal governments do more to ensure that the community is not discriminated against, that the right to access necessary medical support continues and that barriers to equality are broken down.

The Indian High Court decision shows what we already know, that TGD people have a right to exist and be treated as equal members of society.
